The Big Picture

At this point in the novel, several issues and themes on life have been portrayed and explored. Of the following, which theme (themes) would you consider to be most important/most explored? Good Again?

Describe Amir's life in America. Has it been successful? Fulfilling? After chapter 16, what are your thoughts on Amir's struggle with his own guilt at this point in the novel? How has your opinion changed about him since he was a boy in Kabul? Do you think he can "be good again?"

Hassan, the Kite Runner

At the end of chapter 7, Amir witnesses the attack and rape of Hassan after Hassan has run down the final kite of the tournament for Amir. Why doesn't Amir step in or help? What is he thinking as he witnesses this? What would you have done if you were in Amir's shoes? Discuss your reaction to this scene and your opinion of Amir's actions.
