At Issue...
What do you see as the most important issue facing American Society today? Explain what you perceive to be the major problem or issue in our country. Show how this issue has affected you in some way, and explain what you think society, the government, et al. should do to address the problem.
I believe a major problem within our country is our schooling. I think that it is not individualized enough. Our current system gives every student the same amount of english, science, history, health, etc. While it does teach everyone the basics and understanding of life, it doesn't teach students about themselves, or what they want to do with their lives. I think that schooling should be more devoted to helping students grow in the path they want to take. If a student wants to be a musician, their schooling should have more elements of music to learn in it. If a student wants to be an IT support, their schooling should be more geared towards computers and their specific field of work. The only issue with this system is people changing what they want to do, and that already happens, costing people thousands in college courses. This could also completely eliminate college, causing free schooling to be enough for the average student to learn their trade.
ReplyDeleteThey don't need to make the schooling more individualized but they do need to teach things that will help us later in live not just a bunch of useless information
Deletebut half the time people in their 11th and 12th grade year they may not know what they want to do with their life.
DeleteI agree with this, Cassidy. I also agree with Jacob, the school system fails to prepare us for "real world" problems and situations.
DeleteSome interesting thoughts here. Cassidy, at what age do you feel public education should allow more freedom of choice? How would that look in actual reality? Jacob, can you define "things that will help us later in life?" What type of "useless info." have you been taught? Johnny, can you define "real world problems?" To all of you, whose responsibility is it to teach life skill, real-world problems, etc.? Is it your primary educator and influence, your parents/family? Or, should schools have that obligation?
DeleteI believe that your ability to choose what direction your schooling leads you should start in high school, so that you can start ruling out or accepting potential paths you'd like to take and have plenty of time to consider. There could be a period where the student could try out that job or see what it requires you to do, along with how you would have to budget with that job's pay, etc. I also think that schools should have that obligation, as not all kids and students are taught everything they need to know by their parents. For most, it would be a mix of parents and school teaching life skill, but this way would help those who aren't taught these things by their parents.
DeleteMr. Brindle, in my opinion, young adults will have to learn the hard way sometimes in life after high school and parents, mentors, and family should help prepare them for the real world. However, I also think that the education system should be teaching these young adults about how to prepare for being an adult and facing problems on their own. When i say "real world problems," I mean tasks such as taxes, bills, loans, insurance, investments, and more... the list of things that students coming out of high school don't know how to do is scary.
DeleteI completely agree Cassidy. I think that schools sometimes fails to consider what is really important for our future.
DeleteCassidy, I would actually be in favor of allowing "Vocational Pathways" to students beginning in 11th grade. This could be several internships (mixed with some core classes still) and career work combined. At this point, students planning on the university pathway could continue taking college-prep courses.
DeleteThe problem, as I see it, is that society has tried to shift the social burden of life education onto schools, and while that may be a part of schools' role in society, it is a smaller role than many believe. I think the primary purpose of education is to show students how to learn. "Learning to learn" is a difficult, yet vitally important skill. Schools provide intellectual, emotional, and social skills to "prepare" young adults to be able adapt to whatever situations life presents them. I think it's very limiting and a disservice to prep a 17-year old with a specific set of job skills for the rest of his/her life. I think teaching a student how to read, think, work hard, communicate, adapt, prepare, adjust, deal with failure are much more advantageous skills as they will allow anyone to learn anything else they need to learn.
Good thoughts.
One important issue facing American Society today, would be suicide. A way this issue has affected me is when last year one of my friends committed suicide. What I think society should do about this problem is, try to find people that have problems and have thought about it, and try to help them through their problems so that they aren't thinking of taking their own lives.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
Delete@Jrcvaega racism is a problem but i think Jacob brings up a good point of ONE of the major issues in this country. Suicide has effected many people.
DeleteSuicide and mental illness, such as depression, which often goes untreated for lack of services, is a MAJOR issue in our society. I have had two close friends commit suicide within the past 3 years, and two friends who fortunately survived suicide attempts. All of them needed help they were unable to find.
DeleteThe biggest issue in our country is that the politics and presidency are absurd. This presidency change has made our country worse than it was. Starting with the dispute between U.S.A. against the Korean dictator. Those conflicts have extended to very bad situations and the bad thing about it is that both presidents have a couple loose screws. The most devastating thing that recently happened is that the presidency has eliminated DACA. I feel so bad for those who were about to major into something but now all those strong efforts and hard working efforts have been thrown out the window. It definitely affects me because its disappointing and frustrating that people who were against it laughed at this decision. I believe that government should act fast about all the incorrect decisions that the presidency is going to make and should hols up against it. I think that all this is a joke and an intimidating way to present there decisions. I hope that society and the good part of the government can do something about both situations.
ReplyDeleteI disagree sir the politics are doing fine at this point and time
DeleteI think that some of these decisions are not just based off of what Trump thinks, but I understand your frustration, Carlos.
DeleteMichael, can you clarify what you mean by "the politics are doing fine?" Carlos, what do specifically see as a problem with our president? In addition to his DACA decision (which I thought was foolish, but hopefully Congress addresses it appropriately, as I think it will), what decisions or characteristics of his do you disagree with?
DeleteOut of all the issues that are arising today, I believe there is one that has affected and still affects Americans throughout the course of our country. Racism is a huge problem today in our world, but it is specifically wreaking havoc in America today. The roots of racism date all the way back to when the first major groups of people came over to America and began to farm. Many white farm/plantation owners would buy and sell slaves to live and work on their farm. In many cases, living conditions were brutal for the majority of owned slaves. They were paid little to nothing, forced to live in shacks, and often beat and tortured if they weren't meeting the needs of their owners. Once slavery was abolished in 1865, the population of slaves obviously rejoiced, but they then had to face a new problem, life as a free man. Back then and still today even, there is segregation around the country, whether you notice it or not. This issue has affected our learning and viewpoint on society as a whole. Instead of seeing people from the southern region as kind people, the public image might have changed to perceive them as racist, cruel people. Luckily, this hasn't really affected me other than on the learning side of it. Moving forward, I think solving this conflict will be a lot easier said than done. As a nation, we must come together and look past physical appearances, and realize that there is more to a person than just their skin color.
ReplyDeleteThe most important issue facing American Society is probably terrorism. I believe that terrorism is one of the most important issues facing America at the moment because bombs going off, people blowing people up and all that. Well terrorism doesn't really affect me personally, i mean if they come to Iowa then its getting personal. Everybody is going to strap up and be ready for them. Well what i think society and the government should do is just take out all the threats any way possible just to prove a point and possibly end it all.
ReplyDeleteYou can't just end it all because there is innocent families and people that have nothing to do with terrorism. If the United States were to do this there would be a lot of collateral damage against those families. Also, it would just make tensions even worse and possibly end a lot more lives in the process.
Delete"Take out all the threats anyway possible" is not a valid solution to the terrorism problem. You have to keep in mind that there are many people in threatening countries that don't want to be there and don't agree with the chaos in their own country, so it would be wrong to harm anyone that doesn't want to be there.
DeleteI believe that terrorism is not a large issue in America. It is a major problem in other places though.
Deletehttps://www.forbes.com/sites/dominicdudley/2016/11/18/countries-most-affected-by-terrorism/#3f9dba9530d9
This article lists the 10 top most threatened countries by terrorism as of November, 2016. I think it is worth looking into if you are interested to see where and who needs more support and help as a result of terrorism.
Can you define "people blowing people up and all that?" Can you explain exactly who "all the threats" are and how exactly the "government" should "take them out?"
DeleteEntering the world of society is the most important. for another reason im scared for the real world is the crime in it . but most importantly is getting there own place and there own car. the government can help with only a hand full of problems at a time.
ReplyDeleteTo me the most important issue facing American Society is the lack of Ag literacy. Ag literacy is very important because people need to know what farming does for them many think that farmers don't have any effect in there life. Many people don't even know that the gas they put in there car is made from corn or that the clothes on there back is made from products that farmers make. People need to know that with out farmers this country would fall apart because we wouldn't produce anything and would have to buy and ship in everything and this country would go even further to debt. Many other people don't under stand how big of a impact that farming makes on there home town almost all of the large businesses in Cascade are Ag businesses. Also I strongly believe that Iowa should be one of the most Ag literate states because we are number one producer on Corn, Soybeans, Pork and eggs and that is what brings all the money and business into the state.
ReplyDeleteDo you genuinely believe that "most people" don't understand the role of the agricultural industry or of agricultural big business in America? What evidence do you have to support that idea? Do you really believe that "most people" that utilize gasoline mixed with ethanol (which isn't all gasoline or even most gasoline) don't understand that it comes from corn? Do you really believe that "most people" in a town like Cascade don't understand the economic impact of ag-related businesses?
DeleteWhat facts do you have to back up your statement of "many think that farmers don't have any effect?" I disagree with that statement because its not that people don't think they have an impact, it's that people just don't think of farmers. The ethanol content of most of the motor gasoline sold in the United States does not exceed 10% by volume.
DeleteAmerica's Society has many issues that perceive a problem or issue in our country. The one i'm going to be discussing is unemployment. Only sixty-three percent of American's have jobs or that are seeking for employment. Even though the unemployment rate has been dropping, many of them are unemployed for long term, so they have given up on job seeking. They say that since the economy is still very weak its not able to produce enough jobs, so its not able to provide jobs for all the people. As an senior soon to be entering the work force scares me because you might get out of college with your degree and struggle to find a job right away. Hopefully they are able to continue to strengthen our economy as the years go by so we are able to have the unemployment rate decrease.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this, I think that it is very scary how many people are unemployed today and how many people that just don't even care to try to find a job.
DeleteThe biggest issue I see in today's society is the racial tension with minority groups. This has affected me in many ways because I see it in everyday life. Whether its in the news about police brutality or at the school. There is many cases and incidents where racial crimes have been committed. I have experience with this because I have had some conflicts with another race but I didn't hold it against him in any way. We are still good friends and possibly even better friends after that dispute. This issue is important to me because I think it is so immature to dislike another race when biologically we are the same. Today's society has tried to overcome this many times but in the end it comes down to your personal morals.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is completely immature to dislike someone because of there skin color because like you said biological we are the same.
DeleteI agree and I believe that racial crimes are ignorant and not necessary. People are the same, and skin color should not matter.
DeleteIn American society today there are many issues that people face. One of the major problems that people have to face is dealing with the social media. Social media has become a huge problem in today’s society and ruins a lot of people’s lives. My generation has gotten so attached to social media that it takes up to majority of their lives. Some people never meet each other but have friendships via social media. People define their popularity and surround their happiness around who has the most likes on an Instagram picture or who has the most followers. I think that social media is a good thing but I think sometimes it gets a little out of hand, I even catch myself getting too caught up in it all. People don’t go outside and enjoy the fresh air enough because all they want to do is be on their phones. Taking pictures is a nice thing and getting to share it with friends and family that you don’t get to see often is nice as well. Sometimes people need to sit down and just enjoy the moment without the cellphone.
ReplyDeleteI agree with how social media is defiantly an issue with our generation. Some people feel the need to be attached to their phones 24/7 and don't realize what they are all missing out on.
DeleteI agree that social media is being used in the wrong way. The way that social media is used needs to be change back to they way it use to. I think that social media has its pros but there is a limit that needs to be made.
DeleteI agree with this, Anne. I have also noticed that people behave differently and almost take on a different identity behind a screen versus in person.
DeleteHere's a relevant article for you, Anne: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/09/has-the-smartphone-destroyed-a-generation/534198/
DeleteI think a major issue today in America's society is racism. Racism is slowly getting better, however with recent incidents of cops wrongfully shooting African Americans, there has been an increase of outrage and protest. These shootings have happened throughout the United States, and protests are becoming more popular. Some protesters gather in streets, some are violent, and some are small actions but on a big stage. There have been people ran over by cars, and professional athletes not standing for the national anthem. This social problem hasn't directly affected me, as Cascade, Iowa hasn't had any recent major issues with racism outrage. However, as a young member of a new generation in this society I feel obligated to spread my thoughts and stop racism when I see it. Racism is a mindset, it's something that is passed down from generation to generation. Luckily my parents and grandparents have taught me that racism is ignorant, and that no one should be judged solely on their skin color. It might be too late to persuade older generations, but my generation can make a difference. I believe that by making it known that racism is not cool and not acceptable, that we can make substantial progress to ending racism.
ReplyDeleteI believe one of the most important issues in American Society could be social classes. There are many in the United States who are living in poverty. Then you have people who make an income and are able to support a family and live in a home. Now we get to the people who do not worry about money as much and have everything they want or need. This problem may be caused in our American Society because we have the people who may not be able to work so they are not able to support themselves or a family. Many people nowadays have jobs if that means working at a gas station or working as a CEO for a business; then there are many people who are not able to find work and do not have a home or family. I have experienced this problem in my school. I see this at my school walking the hallways i might see a student who does not have the things they need for school and then i see the students who have everything they need for school. Then you see the students who walk around in a new pair of jeans and under armor clothing and then you have the students who walk around in clothes they may have to wash every night because they don't have anything else to wear. Social classes may have an effect on your life and you just don't see it.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you Morgan, people are placed into social classes and this is an issue.
DeleteI believe that the biggest issue in this country today is drugs. Drugs are a huge deal because not just college kids are involved with them these days, many high schoolers and junior high kids have access to them also. Thinking about how easily kids can get drugs these days is scary. Drugs have many downfalls that effect the society we live in, the harmful effect to the body and unemployment. When kids do drugs they don’t think about the things that happen to their body they are just thinking about the feeling they are getting. Drugs also effect unemployment rate because when people get involved in these kinds of things it is the only thing that matters to them anymore. They start to not want to work so they don’t show up which leads them to get fired. If they get in trouble with drugs this then leads them to not be able to get jobs anymore because no one wants to hire them. I have not been directly involved with drugs but I know people and friends from different schools that have seen it happen intensely around them. Their friends start doing drugs and pretty soon they say they don’t even recognize them anymore. Drugs are on the rise of being abused and used in the wrong way at a young age.
ReplyDeleteI agree it is scary to think of how easily people can acquire drugs. I feel like it is easier than ever to get your hands on drugs and this should be stopped. Drugs have many negative effects that can ruin a persons life.
DeleteI agree with this Kendra, I do think that drugs are a major problem today and it causes people to go crazy.
DeleteI agree its scary how much drugs can effect your lives. Also how quickly you can get addicted to them and how hard it can be to get unhooked from them.
DeleteIn my opinion the biggest issue in American society today is the bitter rivalry between Democrats and republicans. I think this is the biggest issue because it divides the country and for people like myself who will be able to vote in the next election it makes it very confusing to choose what party to vote for. Both parties view one another as evil people trying to ruin the country. So as an 18 year old it makes it very hard to decide what to support and what not to support. I think in today's society a lot of people are not very open to what their political views. Discussing politics today is a very awkward thing because people so strongly support their own side and basically agree with nothing on the other side. I encountered this awkwardness over the summer at a small family gathering. A political discussion was brought on and every single person at the table remained quite. The only answers would be a quiet "I don't know" or "yeah". It was like the adults were trying to avoid a fight by slightly ignoring the conversation. But then later when I was with two of my aunts and an uncle alone they were fully discussing the conversation because they all had the same political views. I thought this was funny how they were so privately proud but would not voice an opinion without knowing everyone else's views around them. This showed just how awkwardly divided the country is. Not even families will discuss their views if they do not know that everyone is on the same page. I think the country should not be split into these two parties, that are bitter rivals it makes it very hard for youths to decide what side they are on.
ReplyDeleteExcellent points, Austin. I would say the divide between political parties is as wide as I've ever seen it. And, beyond that, I feel people are ceasing to actually hold "political views," but rather hold "emotional views." This leads them to abandon logic and empathy and the ability to critically discuss ideas, so they just shout and call each other names. Your job as a new "citizen" is to sift through ideas and read and think and form your own world view and critical understanding. Good luck:)
DeleteI agree that this is a big problem in our country. I think that people should be more proud for their beliefs. When people talk about politics no one should be shamed if they are a democrat or republican. You should not be judged for the person you think is fit for this country. Everyone has that freedom and it should not be taken away from them.
DeleteThe most important issue facing American Society today is racism/cultural background. This issue not only affects me, but it affects many of the people around me. Due to stereotypes people are automatically placed into categories based on their race and skin color which can restrict them from certain opportunities. This is a major issue in our country that needs to be addressed, and in order for this issue to be addressed, I think the government should take action and provide everyone with the same opportunities. DACA recipients, for example, should have the same opportunity as U.S citizens to be able to legally work in this country. Skin color and race shouldn't define who we are, our actions should. Together we can all help racism diminish.
ReplyDeleteI agree that today's society has a a lot of racism happening.
DeleteI agree that today's biggest issue is racism. Skin color should not make you like or dislike someone more than anyone else.
DeleteIn the Americas society there are many troubles in the world. There are a lot of kids that have to go through conditions in there home life that many of us will never endure. Whether it is a divorce in the family or a parent that is addicted to some sort of drugs or alcohol. This may be affecting the attitude twords there schooling. So all in all i believe that this is a large problem in the world, because it shows a bad roll model and will effect on their future.
ReplyDeletei believe you were to write about one issue not talk about several on hand but hey i see what you are trying to do
DeleteI completely agree with you Cody conditions at home have a major effect on a kids schooling and their attitude towards it
DeleteIt states that it is about how some children are being affected during there home life which many change there attitude twords school or other topics
DeleteYou describe a very real issue, Cody, which is that deteriorating home lives have a profound effect on kids, their education, and their mental well being. Children's homes will always be the number one influence in their lives, and way too many kids are dealing with issues they never should have to. Understanding these issues and offering services to help, from an educational and societal perspective, is extremely important.
DeleteOne issue facing American Society today is racism. It’s something that was really effective before. Now a days it’s not shown that much, but there is some. Everyone has their opinion if there is a lot of it going on or not. In my view I feel like there still is racism going on. I say that because of the way how most people agree and want DACA to be taken away. I don't see why they want it away. All of the people that have it, have it to finish school, college, and work. They have it so they can help them out with their lives and families. I see this as racism because of how he took it away from all of the many different people that have it. How bad they wanted it away and by that being taken away the dreamers will no longer be able to keep on following their dream they had. Their careers end and many lose their jobs. With this still going on every dreamer is scared they won’t be sure on what they will do if they officially take it off or when their DACA expires. This doesn’t affect me, but I know many people that have it and it's really helpful for them because they can keep on following their dreams and goals because of it.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you Blaza that racism is an issue in the American Society. I believe it is an issue because some people will judge other people because they are different skin color. We all see it happening and some people may be oblivious to the fact that it is happening , but its not right and needs to be changed.
DeleteI believe that the most pressing issue in American Society today is the institutionalized racism that our country is based on. Institutional racism is racism that has become established as normal behavior within a society or organization. I believe this to be the biggest problem today, because I see it every day, and more now than ever before. Now, this hasn't directly affected me because I am white, but if affects me when I see my friends who are scared that their parents might be deported. It affects me when Nazis march freely in the streets, and people I know are scared to go outside because they could be assaulted or worse. I believe as a society we need to stand up to racists, white supremacists, KKK, and neo- Nazis. We need to show them that thinking this way is wrong and evil. We should stand up in anyway we can. whether it's, not laughing at a stupid racist joke or marching in the streets. I know we can't end racism over night but every time you act there is an equal reaction.
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you, Kiley. You have many reasons that are very true. The institutional racism is everywhere and it happens everyday. This is wrong, racism has grown to an extensive level in which people nowadays happen to see as a normal thing. This is very wrong and crucial.
DeleteI agree with you Kiley, because we do need to stand up to racists. Its wrong that they think people are different and because of that get assaulted like you said and just get looked at.
DeleteI believe that the most important issue in American society today is the cancellation of DACA. DACA is a program that gives undocumented young adults that were brought to the United States as young kids an opportunity to work or go to college. This has not only affected me, but many other dreamers like myself. it has affected me because, I have the fear of not being able to go to college and not make my parents proud of me. I have so many other fears, like not getting a good decent job and helping my family out with bills and everything else. Many of us have the big fear of not making our families proud and accomplishing many goals.

ReplyDeleteOne of the major problems affecting America and the whole world is global warming. Scientists and researchers have been proving throughout the years that climate change is a real threat to humans, plant life, and wildlife. I personally feel a connection with nature, and it's devastating to see the effects of air and water pollution. The relentless hurricanes occurring along the East coast and the Gulf coast are prime examples of how real the issue of rising sea levels is. Also, the wildfires and extreme drought happening on the West coast is due to the lack of clean water and record-breaking temperatures that are possible because of greenhouse gases trapping the heat. It's frustrating as an American to have a president back out of the Paris Climate Agreement; as a country, we are moving backwards away from clean and renewable energy.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that this is really affecting society and America. Something needs to be done about it because yes, it really is frustrating especially with out the help of the president of the united states who is supposed to do something about these types of crisis's. This issue makes me scared for what is going to happen in our future.
DeleteToday's society has many uprising problems that our country faces each and every day, but I think racism is the biggest problem in America today. Racism has always been around ever since. Our first president George Washington even had slaves which is crazy to think that our nation's leader owned slaves. So racism has been around for years, and is causing problems yet today. There are many problems with racism. Our country was able to have slaves, but eventually they were set free. It is not right to judge people by the color of their skin. Recently or in the past few years, there have been many outbreaks involving racism. Some examples of recent racism would be the cop shooting. A white cop shot and killed an African American which sparked many riots and protests. Just recently there was a huge problem with White Supremacists in Charleston. This also led to many brutal, violent riots. During one of these riots a person ran over a person with their car killing them during a riot. Racism is around us no matter where we go. Racism is a thing our country has dealt with for decades and is still a huge problem today. There is no way we can end racism, but we can make it less of a problem in our country by teaching our kids, students, and communities to not judge people by the color of their skin. We are all equal no matter what race.
ReplyDeleteI agree I believe there will never be a complete removal of racism in our country.
DeleteMitchell I agree that racism is a huge problem in out country and is around us no matter where we go.
DeleteI believe that the biggest problem in the United States is racism. Furthermore, I believe another huge problem in the United states is the fact that people consider only whites can be racist. This angers me because everyday I see prejudice and discrimination directed towards whites, but nobody views that as racism. Everyday that I go on Twitter, a popular social media application, I see racism towards whites. I also believe that there is a problem with whites who are still practicing racism. Recently, there was an African American kid who was almost lynched by fellow white teenagers. This is one of the most pathetic things I have ever heard. The fact that a kid who isn’t even in his teenage years yet, and people tried to hang him from a tree is appalling. In brief, I think racism will always be an issue, and we as a country will never completely overcome it. It may become less of an issue, but it will always remain a problem in our country.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Brock that racism will never end in our country, it will always remain as a problem. It hopefully will be less of a problem someday, but I believe that it will never end.
DeleteI agree, racism has been around for many years in America and will more than likely be around for many years to come. I also agree with your statement that people think whites are the only ones who can be racist. No matter what race you are, you can still be racist to others.
DeleteThe most important issue facing American society today, in my opinion would be the social classes. Throughout the nations there is a great majority of citizens whom are unemployed and have to work hard and do every single little thing that they can do to make money in order to support themselves or their family. We also have the citizens who don't have any problems with getting a job, who don't really have to worry because everything they want is right in front of them and within reach without facing problems. In my own area I see these issues happening, in school it happens more than it should. There are the kids who are coming to school without the supplies that they need for their classes and in clothes that may not be very well kept as best as they should. Then we have the kids who have more than enough of everything that they need for their classes and come to school in brand new clothes, that you could think would be expensive brands of clothing. Some kids already have jobs, they have to make their own money, possibly because their parents can't support all of their family's needs independently anymore. Also, there are kids who don't even have jobs because their family or whoever takes care of the money situations has it under control and makes enough money to support everyone with no problem. Social classes can have a big effect on a person or family's life but you can't always see it.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with your saying that their is a great majority of citizens who are unemployed. Because according to the most recent unemployment rate it is 4.3% which is just .1% above the lowest unemployment rate in U.S. history. So for you to say that a great majority of citizens are unemployed is incorrect.
DeleteI agree with you strongly Faith, social classes do have a big effect on someone's life, because those who can't be supported financially and miss out on there teenage life because of work, and because they have to grow up to help there family.
DeleteAn issue that America is facing today is Social media. The group that this issue is hurting the most are teens, the next generation. Most of these teens are so much on there phones using social media that they lack communication and sleep. Not only is the lack of communication and sleep the only problem but the way teens behave. Usages of social media make people more aggressive sexually and cyber-bullying, they tend to be secure behind a screen that they say whatever they want. People who are too attached to their social media need to start interacting and living in the moment. This has not only affected me but everyone else in today's world. Even at school in all classes teens get distracted so easily, that they always find a way to be on there phone, distracting them from what they are doing in class. I think that this issue could solved with everyone's effort by trying to do things that will take your mind off the phone, don't just be somewhere boring or laying at home where you'll be tempted to use it.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is an issue. Once someone asked me if I would rather never laugh again, or never use social media again. I said I would never use social media again if it meant I could laugh, but I'm sure some people would have chosen the other option, and that makes me sad for humanity.
DeleteI agree that the connection we have with social media does have negative impacts on our lives. it is scary how dangerous people are when they know they are hidden behind a computer or phone screen, and cyber bullying is a very real issue in today's society.
DeleteI strongly agree with you Victoria on your opinion of today's social media problem. Kids even parents now are addicted to their phones, and aren't putting it down. I agree with the cons of social media, but there are many great things that technology can do today. People just need to learn to use technology in moderation.
DeleteI agree with this issue. We all get too engaged within our phones and social media, that we freak out if we don't even have our phones on us. I myself am guilty of participating in this issue and I am not proud of it.. This is kind of a pretty sad topic to be such a popular issue in America today.
DeleteI believe that the biggest problem that Americans face today is the lack of suicide awareness. This is a growing problem that many Americans face/have faced on a daily basis. Whenever you hear about someone killing themselves, people automatically think, "I didn't think that he was the type of person to do this." What people don't realize is that the human mind is one of the most dangerous places for a human being to get stuck in. I know that this sound weird and may not make sense to some people but, whenever someone does kill themselves, they didn't think about doing it that day. These people have been thinking about it, and looking at their options and not seeing a way out they finally do something that many think is unimaginable. Each year, 34,598 people die by suicide, an average of 94 completed suicides every day. More people die by suicide (34,598) than by homicide (18,361) in the United States. Suicide is the eleventh-leading cause of death across all ages. More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED. Ways to solve this problem is to set up things like the suicide hotline, and to have councilors help you when your mind is in a dark place.
ReplyDeleteYou provide some excellent points here, Hunter. As I mentioned in another comment, this hits close to home for me as I have had two good friends kill themselves in the past few years, and fortunately two others two survived their attempts. All four suffered from depression and/or addiction issues. Do you see those issues as being related?
DeleteDepression and/or addiction issues are very related in many cases of suicide. A close family friend battled with addiction for years and ended up taking his own life because he felt that was the only way he could get away from it all. Many cases of suicide are related to depression as well as things like PTSD. Some studies suggest that suicide risk is higher among those who experienced trauma due to the symptoms of PTSD, others claim that suicide risk is higher in these individuals because of related psychiatric conditions.
DeleteI believe that a real issue that has arose across the U.S. is that Feminism has lost its true meaning. Feminism, in 1848 when Feminism started, was originally intended to show that women where just as good as men and they should have the same rights as men. Simple. Feminism in 2017 however, is not the same. Somewhere along the lines the goal of equal rights regardless of gender was lost and so people put there own ideas in. The term Feminist is a label that means a person that supports Feminism. Feminist has lost most, if not all, meaning. When most people hear the word Feminist they think of another term known as Feminazi which if you Google it comes up as "a radical feminist." this is not right. Feminazi means some people, not just women, think that; all men are rapist, women are superior to men and so on and so forth. The term feminist is a broad umbrella. To most people the loudest people are the people who are right but that is not the case with feminism. The people who make up a majority of feminism do not push feminism onto others. They are the quite majority. The majority has a good idea of what feminism should be, its just the loud minority that is ruining it for everyone else.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there is a loud minority of women who push their beliefs - such as women being superior to men - onto other people, however, I don't agree that the "goal of equal rights regardless of gender was lost". I think the term feminist is still reserved today for anyone of any gender who believes in equal rights for every gender; people who think one gender is above another are not genuine feminists.
DeleteI happen to disagree with your main sentiment that Feminism's meaning has been lost. You're assuming that this is what most people feel about Feminism which doesn't have grounds as an argument. I don't believe that a small minority of radicals ruins an entire philosophy of which you agree the majority still believes in the original core values. Just because the only people you hear from you think are crazy or "Feminazis" is only because of sensationalism. Those at the absolute sides of the spectrum get press and you aren't necessarily hearing the arguments that are being given because you aren't looking in those circles where it's being discussed. The same argument has been used against Muslims. Not every Muslim is a terrorist and they do not speak for the group as a whole or "ruin" everyone else's philosophy. They are simply individuals.
DeleteI believe a major problem in within our own country is “Drug Overdose”. Now a days is easy to acquire drugs from an online site or to a off the street drug dealer or a simply a doctor's written prescription drug. Because many people are trying to get away from their problems or the fact that this world has so many problems, that they found a way to escape and that's by taking drugs. Anyways the problem here is that once they taking some pills they get hooked on, taking more and more in until the pain is finally gone. Those people lose so much and leave behind a lot, like love ones, kids, brothers, sisters, family, friends. They were more than 50,000 deaths in total just last years alone. That's the highest it has ever reach in the last 15 years. This hasn't affected me yet or hopefully it won't happen to someone who I love and care or anyone else. Many people don't know that overdosing is a real big problem because it has started increasing over the years and it's becoming a major issues in our country. Here's a website with alittle more information.

I agree Sebas, drug overdoes are really popular today in America and they do kill thousands of people.
DeleteAs Americans we have many problems that we have to face. One issue that I think is the most important is abortion. Abortion plays a huge role in the economy and in society today. Many people have their beliefs and opinions on this issue, but I believe it is wrong and should become illegal because you are taking the life of an innocent baby. If you would not like to have your baby there are many other options that do not take a life like putting your baby up for adoption. There are so many couples out there that can not have children, and then you have other people who just take the life of theirs. How do you think those couples who can't have children feel about that. Those people would of took the baby in a heartbeat. So I believe as Americans we should take into consideration of those who are not able to have children when we want to abort. Again abortion is wrong and we should not have to take lives of those who would have mattered in this world. Do not do something that you are going to probably regret in the future.
ReplyDeleteI agree Tori, if parents of the child do not want to take any responsibility whatsoever, then they should be taking other options opened to them. They should not be killing a human being who has done nothing to them or who doesn't deserve dying. I believe that if the couple or the girl don't want it, they should take a consideration to give the baby up for adoption to get the life or a future that the baby deserves instead of being killed.
DeleteI disagree with this. I think it is the woman's body so they have the right to determent what they want to do with the baby. To me you're saying that the baby has a right to live regardless of what the mother thinks but that is also saying that she is going to have a child whether or not the mother wants it. Most of the time people who have abortions are people who are under aged or can not afford the child. Overall there is no real reason to make illegal
DeleteI believe that the most important issue in America today is racism. Racism has been around for many years in America. It all started when we started bring slaves to the U.S. from different countries. These people were treated terribly for a long period of time. After slavery was over with, it was hard to be a free African American. A main time in history when racism was really bad would be during the mid 1950's. In this time period African American people didn't have many of the same rights as white Americans did. A man by the name of Martin Luther King Jr. started the Civil Rights Movement that pushed to give African Americans more rights. African American people eventually ended up getting the same rights as whites. Racism is still show today in many ways. One way racial discrimination is shown today is with salaries. Today in America, a black man only makes just about 75% of what a white man would make. This means that they both could be doing the same exact job and just because of their race, one is making more than the other. I believe that racism is a big issue in America today for this reason and many more.
ReplyDeleteOne of todays biggest issues we face is racism. Racism is still a huge issue today when it should have never been an issue to start with. Just because someone elses skin color is different than yours does not mean anything. Everyone is different, skin is just a big organ. We all have it to cover our bodies, the only difference is the color and shape, which has no meaning because underneath we are all the same. Racism is a huge problem all around the world, which is horrible. I think Racism is one of the biggest problems in todays society.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Taya, the color of our skin shouldn't matter. Skin is just a big organ keeping us alive.
DeleteI believe the most pressing issue plaguing the country is the supremely dissimilar state of power different people have. Political figures can sweep all they want under the rug and get away with it because the next day there will be an argument to take its place. Those in power are not being punished for lying or crimes and the impoverished are being unjustly and unethically prosecuted. One example would be Joe Arpaio, who was recently pardoned by the president. He committed many crimes, though he was to be enforcing them as a sheriff, and he is glorified because of fear mongering and blatant lies to the general public. Criminals should be held accountable but those with power and money get to decide if they are criminals or not. Those with power abuse it. This can be seen in the numerous police shootings in the many years in which this has been occurring. The DOP have found a substantial amount of inconsistencies in police data. One example is the policeman who had shot Tamir Rice by using excessive force; he was never charged even though there was evidence to suggest he was unfit for the job beforehand. These people need to be held accountable for their actions. Without prosecuting these power obsessive and abusive people, there is no such thing as real justice in America.
ReplyDeleteI agree with all the people who wrote about racism in America. Yes its one of our major issue in our country, but people mostly think its between white and blacks but its not. There are way more group who dislike each other then the original stereotypes. But sad reality knowing this country grow up with racism being apart of it, at a MLB game this past Wednesday night some fans showed a banner saying "Racism is as American as Baseball", We can't complete remove racism in our country but we can lower it down were its not a big as a problem it is now. Here are some links explaining more about the problem.
