Discuss your initial thoughts on Amir, our narrator, so far in the story. Describe him. In addition, how do you feel about how he views his father and how he views/treats Hassan?

Comments

  1. My initial thoughts on Amir are that he is a very smart boy but can also be very sensitive. He also tries so hard to be like his father, or make him proud, but they don't have any interests in common. Amir loves to write and read books , unlike his father who loves sports and is into business. Amir also get jealous really easy, and wants love from his father. When his father gave attention to Hassan, he got really jealous of it. Amir treats Hassan as a good friend but once he starts getting attention from his father he starts attacking him with jealously. Amir loves his father but also fears him. He doesnt want his father to get upset with him, so he trys acting like he enjoys his fathers interests. Also Amir is trying to gain trust by his father and grow a relationship with him, but so far isnt going so well.

  2. My initial thoughts of Amir is that he is a very smart young boy. Amir isn't a very strong boy he doesn't like sticking up for himself and has always had Hassan to back him up. I think that he is very sensitive because whenever he doesn't get attention from his father her gets upset or if his father is giving someone else attention he gets jealous. I think that the relationship that Amir and his father have is kind of sad because in the story Amir said that he wished Baba wasn't his father and that he wished Rahim Khan was his father. He just doesn't think that he can relate to his father that well and that his father doesn't understand him. I think that Hassan really looks up to Amir and sees him as a best friend. But Amir seems like he's almost embarrassed of Hassan when they get around other people. I think he might be ashamed that he is friends with someone who isn't excepted in their culture. But Amir is also pretty good to Hassan because he does see him like a bother and really does like him even though he is a little different from him.

  3. Amir is a person that has moved away and is not very thrilled about going back because he has a bad past there but he does have a very close friend back home that he might want to go see. I feel that he is not very close to his father at all because his father does not like how sensitive he is and how he is more into the arts and not soccer. An example of this would be when they where at the Buzkashi tournament and the one rider got trampled and died and Amir cried after seeing it and his dad thought he was a wuss. I have a strong feeling that there relationship is not very close because of that and I feel going on in the book there relationship will weaken more.

  4. My thoughts on Amir is he is a caring friend that doesn't judge people and wants to be accepted by his father. He is caring to people that may not pose as socially acceptable to his society but he stays true to his friends despite others discriminating them. Amir is very studious and try's to learn more than he is allowed to learn.

  5. Amir is a very smart young boy. Amir enjoys reading and writing, and isn't into sports like soccer. Amir also gets bullied/ pushed around by the other kids and Hassan sticks up for him because Amir doesn't. Amir isn't very close to his father because he feels ashamed that he isn't like him and won't live up to his name. Amir is more like his mother sensitive and creative, unlike his father who is masculine and enjoys sports like soccer. Amir and Hassan are best friends, yet Hassan is still his servant. Amir enjoys spending time with him and playing only when they're alone, but feels kind of embarrassed of him. Amir i reading and finding out more about his culture and is starting to put things together.

  6. My initial thought on Amir, is that he a little kid, so he doesn't know what he's doing but he's also smart. I don't really like how he treats Hassan, sure he treats him better than he should, be but with the type of relationship that they have he at times doesn't treat him fairly. For example when Hassan asked him what "Imbecile" meant, he told him the opposite of what it meant. Or when Hassan asked a question about the short story he wrote, and Amir took it offensive. I feel bad at times with how Baba treats Amir, sometimes Amir really admires his father but he once said how he wished that Rahim Khan was his father. I feel like I can relate to him, because sometimes when my parents do something that I don't like I wish that too, which is bad. I see where his father comes from too, how he doesn't like that Amir didn't turn out like him, but he should be patient and still show him love.

  7. My initial thoughts on Amir are that even though he is young, he is very intelligent. Amir is more like his mother, he likes to read and write instead of playing and watching soccer like his father. He is also meek; he does not stand up for himself. As Baba explained to Rahim Khan, Hassan is usually the one that stands up for him when other kids are picking on him. I don’t feel very good about the way he treats and views Hassan. Even though he spends a lot of time with him, that’s only because other kids aren’t around. When Baba’s friends come over and they bring their kids, Amir plays with their kids and leaves Hassan out. I also don’t agree with the fact that Amir teases Hassan and to make up for it, gives him old shirts or broken toys. He doesn’t view Hassan as a friend, he views him only as his servant. I simply don’t agree with the way Amir treats Hassan at times. Although, I do agree with the way he views his father. He views Baba as a powerful man that everyone respects. He’s a well-known and wealthy man he looks up to.

  8. i thick Amir is a bright young man but his dad whats him to be just like him at some times for this reason i think his dad is to busy for his son at sometimes he is also a brilliant teacher to his friend he is helping read.

  9. My initial thoughts on Amir is that he is a very intelligent kid who took after his mother. Of reading, writing, being caring for others. But Baba doesn't understand his son very well and doesn't open up to him other then try to make a repeat of himself. Amir try to appease his father very hard but trying to do the things his father loves but unfortunately fails at, making his father angrier and frustrated. The way he treats Hassan is good and bad ways, like when his Amir father friends kid come over he plays with them and Hassan but he usually plays with him the most. but one connection I can make is that he takes after his father past as Baba and Ali grow up together making Amir having second thoughts about his relationship with Hassan.

  10. My initial thoughts on Amir are that he is a smart boy. He knows many things when it comes to reading books. He is good on writing and making things up, like the story he made. Another thing is that Amir tries hard to impress and get his father's attention. He tries the best he can, but just can’t get to what his dad wants him to be like. When Baba Amir’s dad, doesn’t give him attention he feels bad. He feels that way because like how I said he tries hard to impress him. I say he feels bad because when he wrote his story he went to his father’s smoking room because that is where Baba was. When he got there Baba and Rahim where there and from that Amir told his dad that he had written a story. When Amir told him, he didn’t really listened to him, didn’t care as much and that’s when he felt sad, but then Rahim showed interest it made Amir feel better. Lastly the way Amir treats Hassan isn’t nice. I say that because there are times where he is “teasing” him because he doesn’t know what some things are. Also also there are times when Amir doesn’t like what Hassan says like when Hassan commented on his story. Amir has his moments when he is nice to him and treats him well, but sometimes doesn’t. When he doesn’t treat him nice he ends up giving Hassan some of his broken toys or old shirts.

  11. In my foray into the book, my first inclination is to think about Amir as an outlier. Though Amir may not always be aware what is going on around him, he is not one to simply accept what he is told without knowing. He is riddled with curiosity. This makes him human but to the other characters in the novel this is an odd and dangerous trait. The other children don’t understand his interests and neither do most of the adults in his life excluding perhaps Hassan and Rahim Khan. Amir’s culture and society are not acclimated towards his thought process and this affects Amir. His lack of “masculinity” is seen as weakness even though he may be mentally stronger. Amir is no fighter and that is why he has a difficult time appeasing his father. Amir is someone who is confused about why the world works the way it does and wishes he could be someone he is not for other's sake.

  12. My initial thought on Amir, is that he is an intelligent young boy. When it comes to books and poems he seems to be interested in them. Amir sometimes isn’t really nice to Hassan which is the part I don’t like about him. Amir and Hassan have a really strong friendship. They both grew up together and have been close friends ever since that. At times Amir treats Hassan unfairly, like he doesn’t play with him when there are other kids around. Baba’s and Amir’s relationship isn’t so strong as it should be as father and son. Baba really doesn’t pay attention to his son because is disappointed that his son isn’t like him.

  13. My initial thought about Amir is that he had a very fun childhood and was a very smart boy. He had a very glamorous life and his dad was very rich. Amir is a very jealous and when Hassan gets attention or an item that he does not receive Amir gets very mad at Hassan. I think that it is very sad about how he views his dad because Amir feels as if that his dad does not care about him and hates him. He always brings up events that he thinks are the reasons that his dad dislikes him. I also think that it is not right how he treats Hassan with such little respect but he also did grow up learning that Hassan is less than him. He relies on Hassan for protection but as soon as Amir does not need him, he treats him like he is an object. I think that this is very unfair for Hassan because he gets treated like this only because of his background.

  14. My initial thought about Amir was that he just a boy simply trying to find his was along life. Although he rarely pleases his father, he is an intelligent young boy that would rather stay inside and read or draw than be outside playing soccer or other games. When talking about his bullying incidents, you begin to see why Amir appreciates Hassan in the story because of the way Hassan stands up for him. On the other hand, Amir returns the favor when some soldiers are saying nasty things about Hassan's mother. The reason behind Baba's lack of interest in Amir is simply because Baba does not see himself in Amir, but rather sees more of himself in Hassan.

  15. hes not like his dad and would rather read than go outside. when he is alone with hassan they act like they are best friends but when they go out in public amir acts like hassan is just his servent

  16. My first thoughts of the narrator was that he is a soft spoken man. I think that the way he views his dad is appropriate. While he may want his father to love and care for him, it is obvious that his father and him are distant. It shows that his fathers interests are much different from his.
The way that Amir treats Hassan is closely related to the way brothers would treat each other. I say this because while Amir will avoid conflict, but unintentionally instigates it by doing so. When this happens, Hassan is usually the first, if not the only, person to stand up for Amir.

  17. My first impression of him is that he a very kind young man. He is very kind to Hassan which is his best friend. Although conflicts present to him, he suffers in disbelief of his relationship with Hassan. He has internal conflicts of whether he should be friends or not with Hassan. He seems to be confused about this situation. Amir treats Hassan like his own brother in many ways any other brother would do. Amir is a very rich and powerful kid who takes the advantage of it to protect Hassan as much as possible. Amir is the type of person that tries to avoid as much conflict as possible.

  18. My initial thoughts about Amir is that he's just a young boy who wants to be noticed by his father. Amir is very intelligent and has a future in writing, but Amir and his father both like different things and that is one reason why Amir thinks his father doesn't have interest in him. Amir gets jealous of Hassan in the story because if Hassan gets something that he doesn't, he treats him without respect. I don't think it's fair to Hassan because when Amir needs Hassan then they are best friends, but when Amir doesn't need him then he acts like Hassan doesn't even exist.

  19. My initial thoughts on Amir is that he is a young kid that has yet to figure his life out due to a somewhat unsupportive father and no mother. He likes to write and read poems, because he doesn't like sports at all. I think Amir views his father as a good guy but a guy that is always trying to force something upon him. I believe he views Hassan as a friend of same age but not a best friend. Because Amir is always told to not be friends and stuff like that with Hassan. So by people telling him that they are starting to sway his mind a little bit in some ways and sometimes he acts like Hassan isn't even there or doesn't even exist.

  20. Amir is an intelligent and kid that enjoys reading and philosophy. He struggles to connect with his father because of how different they are. Baba is a strong, masculine business man of few words that enjoys soccer. Amir, on the other hand, enjoys reading, expressing his feelings and has no interest in sports. Amir is more like his mother who was a gentle, well educated woman. Amir tries to make his dad proud in attempt to bond with him, however he feels that he cannot live up to his dad's expectations because they are so different. Amir talks about Hassan a lot, and states that most memories from his childhood were with Hassan. Amir, however, also states that he didn't think of Hassan as his friend. This is mostly because Hassan is a Hazara, which society has deemed as unworthy people. Amir eventually realizes that Hassan is a very good friend and that he is his friend, more than a servant.

  21. The first thing you notice about amir is that he is quite the smar young man. he really wants to be close to his father and feels that his dad doesnt really care about him. This shows the sensitive side of Amir. Amir is also not the type of kid that plays sports. He likes to read and write. This is why his father seams to not like him. Baba seems to treat Hassan better then his own son. this is because Baba likes hassans personality more than amirs.

  22. My initial thoughts on Amir is that he is a nice kid who is just trying to gain his fathers approval. He is a smart young man who likes poetry and not sports. He is not interested in sports, but tries to be into him because that is what his father likes. His relationship with Hassan is back and forth. He sometimes is nice and good friends with Hassan, but sometimes he is mean to Hassan. He is mean to Hassan because he is jealous of his fathers relationship with Hassan. Amir's relationship with his father isn't a very good relationship. Him and his father don't have a good relationship because they have very different interests. He is always trying to get his fathers approval, but never can get it.

  23. My initial thoughts on Amir is that he is a good kid who just wants his father to notice him. His father views Hassan more his child than Amir, and he is always jealous because of that. Amir and Hassan are good friends. Amir sees Hassan as a brother, but not around people, he only cares for him around his family. Hassan sees Amir as his best friend and brother around everyone, because he truly cares for him.

  24. My initial thoughts on Amir are he is very smart but is selfish at times. He doesn't like all the things his father does and that makes him upset because he tries to relate with his father. Unfortunately for Amir Hassan is more like Baba so Amir gets jealous and thinks Baba should only like him showing his selfishness. The story so far is very interesting, I think the relationships of each character is the most interesting part so far. For example, Amir looks up to his father and wants to make him proud but Amir ended up being like his mother and find a passion for literature. I think Amir shouldn't only try to please his father I think he should do what makes him happy. Also, Amir treats Hassan like a friend while there is no one around but when there are people around he is just the servant boy. I think Amir should treat Hassan the same way whether there are people around or not.

  25. My initial thoughts on this novel is that it is an intense book and you need to follow along very closely. Amir is very smart yet very selfish sometimes. He doesn't always get along with his father. Both Amir and his father are very intelligent and seem to be prepared most of the time. Amir treats Hassan very fake. When people are not around, Amir treats Hassan like a good friend, but when people are around he is just another unimportant boy. Amir should not be two sided with Hassan.

  26. My initial thoughts of the kite runner is that it is a very interesting book. I shows us real life race problems, even though that they are basically the same person. I think that Amir is and Hassan are true friends even though they are different races. Even though Amir thinks that his father don't like him i think that he truly dose. Amir should still go off and be able to do his own thing. I think that Baba treats Hassan so well, because he is basically Amir's brother and he treats him like one. So this is why i think that Baba treats the two boys the way he dose.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't hate Amir but I also don't really like him either. Amir is a twelve-year-old boy who likes to read and write stories. I think he looks up to his father a lot. He sees him as a really great man. I think he treats Hassan poorly. He doesn't treat him badly when it's just them, but when any other kids are around he doesn't stick up for Him, or he ignores him and I think that's not a way that you should treat someone that you think is your friend.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think Amir is a bad friend that lets jealousy corrupt his friendship with Hassan. Hassan is a very loyal and good friend to Amir but Amir still plays tricks on him and treats him like he is far less than him in order to make himself feel better. Amir feels as if he is competing for his fathers acceptance so he doesnt like the fact that even though Hasssan is his servant that he is better than him. He wants to be the best in his fathers eyes but he knows he is not so he takes it out on Hassan despite Hassan being an extremely good friend. I think he has a very unhealthy relationship with his father and Hassan. I think if he could manage to fix the problems between him and his father he would then be able to have a healthy relationship with everyone else in his life.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Amir treats Hassan like his brother. He teases him, plays with him, defends him and overall just treats Hassan like the opposite of what he really is, their Hazara (servant). Amir is a 12 year old pre-teen who is longing for the love of his father, Baba, and a reader can tell a connection between Amir and Baba is something Amir desperately wants, even though they have really nothing in common, and share no common interests. Because Amir perceives Hassan as his brother and also yearns for the love of his father, Amir easily gets jealous when Hassan receives attention from Baba instead of him, and takes his envy out on Hassan because.

    ReplyDelete
  30. My initial thought on Amir is he is a smart young boy. I feel that Amir's father treats Amir differently than he does to Hassan. I think this because Hassan like sports and his father does too. Amir isn't that sports time of person. I think that Amir is sensitive to this because he is very jealous of all the attention that his father gives to Hassan. I also believe that Hassan is a good friend to Amir, but Amir isn't as friendly to Hassan due to the fact that his father gives more attention to Hassan and not to him. Amir wants to be close to his father but he doesn't think that his father does.
